Clear & Transparent Glasses: Sunglasses & Eyewear — Which to Choose and How to Wear Them

Three or four years ago, if you asked for a transparent frame in the shop, we'd show you two or three models and that was it. Today it's one of the first things people ask for — and not only twenty-year-olds. Crystal acetate has become the "new black": discreet, bright, it doesn't weigh down the face, and it goes with everything. Let's look at what's worth knowing before you choose.

What we mean by "transparent" — and why they came back

A transparent frame means acetate with no dye (crystal), or with a light tint that lets the light through: transparent grey, pink, honey/brown, blue, green. The material is the same quality acetate used for tortoiseshell frames — just without the "colouring". Their comeback started with eyewear (the minimal office look) and moved into sunglasses with the oversized designs from Versace, Prada and Miu Miu.

Transparent sunglasses: the models people ask us for

By far the most requested pair of the year is the Ray-Ban Mega Wayfarer in transparent pink and dark blue — the familiar shape, but in a "glassy" version that makes it lighter. Next comes the RB4423D in grey transparent, a big, soft square worn equally by men and women (in the shop we mostly see it on 25-40s). Among the fashion brands, the Versace 4361 in crystal with the Medusa on the temple is the statement piece, while for sport the Oakley Sutro in clear is the pair you see on every cyclist. More affordable and just as good-looking: Vogue in transparent cherry (transparent red), from around 70€.

Transparent eyewear: the minimal office look

Here the transparent frames have a practical advantage nobody thinks about until they wear them: they don't leave a "mark" on the face in photos and video calls the way a black frame does. What you learn in the shop before you buy

Three things from our experience:

They show fingerprints. Greasy marks on the inside of the frame show more than on black. A microfibre cloth in your bag sorts it out — keep your glasses clean and they stay crystal-clear.

Heat is the enemy. A transparent acetate left on the car dashboard in August can cloud or yellow. It's true for all acetate, but on transparent it shows.

The lens edge is visible. On eyewear with high prescriptions, a thick lens "writes" on the side. The answer is a high-index (thinner) lens — we recommend it almost always above -3.00.

Transparent frame + which lens?

For sunglasses, our rule is simple: contrast. A dark grey or blue lens on a crystal frame is the combination that never fails, while a mirror finish (silver, blue) makes the frame almost invisible. Coloured transparent frames (pink, brown) pair best with a gradient lens in the same tone. More in our guide on which lens colour to choose. For eyewear, whatever lens you like — blue light for the office, and photochromic too: transparent acetate looks great when the lens darkens in the sun.
