Yes. The sun emits harmful UV rays that can cause photokeratitis, pterygium and permanent retinal damage.

What exactly are UV rays?

Ultraviolet (UV) rays lie just before violet, in the visible light spectrum. Their main source is sunlight. The ultraviolet light is divided into three different types: UVA, UVB and UVC. UVA has longer wavelengths and passes through glass easily. UVB rays are the most dangerous, making sunglasses and sunscreen essential. UVC rays do not reach the Earth, because the ozone in the atmosphere blocks them.

What are the different types of sunglass lenses?

Different sunglass lens tints can help you see better in different conditions.

  • Blue-blocker lenses block blue light and usually have an amber-brown color. Studies show blue light is harmful and could increase the risk of eye damage from diseases such as macular degeneration. These lenses are popular among skiers, hunters, boaters and pilots, who use them to increase contrast.
  • Both polarized sunglass lenses (polarized) and lenses with an anti-reflective coating help eliminate annoying reflections and glare. Polarized lenses in particular are used a lot by those involved with the sea and snow, but also by cyclists and drivers.
  • Lenses with anti-reflective coatings reduce the glare caused by light reflected off the back surface of your sunglass lenses.
  • Mirrored sunglass lenses: they limit the amount of light entering your eyes, so you feel more comfortable.
  • Sunglass lenses with mirror coatings (also called flash mirrors) are a highly reflective coating applied to the front surface of the sunglass lenses to reduce the amount of light entering the eye. This makes them especially useful for activities in very bright sun, such as skiing on snow on a sunny day.
    Technology has advanced, so today's choice of mirror coatings includes all the colors of the rainbow, as well as silver, gold and metallic copper. Warm pink, blue - almost any color is available.
