Superior protection from HEV and UV radiation...
The Japanese company Tokai has introduced its
new "LUTINA" eyeglass lenses, which deliver a high level of eye protection. They absorb ultraviolet radiation and high-energy visible light (HEV) up to 420 nm — a range that, according to studies, is linked to several eye disorders such as macular degeneration (UV coatings absorb only up to 400 nm).
The damage caused to the eye without protection
The pigment of the macula is made up of three types of carotenoids:
lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin. These reduce the effects of oxidative stress. Over time, as we age, the eye produces a waste product called lipofuscin, which accumulates inside the retinal pigment epithelium.
Lipofuscin acts as a sensitising agent and accelerates
oxidative stress and the destruction of the retinal pigment. By
reducing high-energy visible HEV light, oxidative stress and the destruction of lutein within the retina are reduced.
Absorbing 95% of the harmful radiation
Tests showed that only 5.89% of the rays between 400-420 nm pass through the
LUTINA lens — far less than any other blue-light-absorbing lens on the market. All other manufacturers' blue-light lenses let up to 65% pass through. When a UV-emitting light source passes over a LUTINA lens with a photochromic lens behind it, the photochromic lens does not change colour: photochromic lenses darken with UV radiation, but here the LUTINA lens has already absorbed all the UV.
As people live longer, protecting the retina at every age becomes increasingly vital for preserving vision.
