What do polarized lenses do and how do they differ from plain ones?

Light reflected off horizontal surfaces (water, asphalt, bonnet, snow) is horizontally polarized. A polarized lens has a vertical filter that cuts it, so the glare and eye strain disappear — you see into the water and the road clearly. A plain dark lens simply reduces light, it doesn't cut reflection. UV protection is the same (UV400) on both.

Which polarized sunglasses should I choose and where can I buy them?

It depends on use: for a classic look Ray-Ban 3025 Aviator 002/58 and Wayfarer polarized (crystal G-15), for the beach and fishing Maui Jim PolarizedPlus2, for sport Oakley Prizm Polarized, for a budget option Polaroid and Artwood Milano Bambooline, for kids Polaroid Kids. At Eye-Shop you will find them all 100% authentic from the official distributors, with a manufacturer warranty, shipping across Europe and the option of polarized lenses in your prescription.

Are polarized lenses good for driving?

Yes — they're the best choice for daytime driving, because they cut the glare off asphalt and the bonnet. Two things to note: some LCD screens (dashboard, phone) may darken at a certain angle, and polarized lenses are not for night driving (no dark lens is). For a low sun, prefer a brown or grey polarized category 3.

Are there polarized sunglasses with prescription?

Yes. Almost any of our frames can be made into prescription sunglasses with polarized lenses (grey, brown or green) in your prescription — single-vision or progressive. See our prescription sunglasses or ask us with your prescription. Also, eyeglasses with a magnetic sun clip-on almost always have a polarized clip.

Polarized sunglasses

Sunglasses with polarized lenses will help you see contrasts better, as they eliminate all kinds of reflections.
It is a technology that is particularly helpful in conditions of intense sunlight, especially for those who wear their sunglasses during sports activities, on the water (reflections from the water surface are eliminated) or in high mountains (for better vision on misty peaks).

The best Polarized sunglasses

Polarized sunglasses are equipped with lenses that have a special treatment to align incoming horizontal light, thereby reducing reflection, improving contrast and relieving eye strain.
This technology exists everywhere sunglasses are sold, but polarized sunglasses are not all the same.
While many manufacturers claim their glasses are polarized, the quality of their anti-glare properties and the level of UV protection they offer vary greatly among them.
To find men's and women's polarized sunglasses that are truly the best, you need to understand polarization and how it works to reduce reflection.

How AntiGlare and Polarized sunglasses work

You are driving in the morning when, suddenly, intense sunlight bounces off the cars ahead and blinds you.
Maybe you are out on the open sea and struggle to look in any direction because the ripples flash with intense sunlight.
Or maybe you are fishing your favorite river and your friend points to a fish beneath the surface, but all you see is the reflection of the sun and the sky. All of these are examples of vision glare or "difficulty seeing in the presence of intense light or reflection". Glare is experienced in two ways:
The glare that blinds you is a "reduction in vision caused by intense light within your field of view".
This blinding glare occurs when intense light bounces off a surface and is redirected into your eyes.
Most of the glare you will experience is caused by intense sunlight, which is always above these flat surfaces, so most of the time the light will be reflected horizontally.
Water, snow, the surface of asphalt, these everyday sources of glare reflect light horizontally.
Polarized sunglasses, with special lenses, use a multi-layer material that blocks horizontal light waves while allowing vertical light waves to pass through.
The laminate is applied in a vertical row pattern and works like window blinds to block horizontal light (a horizontal pattern blocks vertical light).

The best polarized glasses come with an evenly applied laminate that works with the contour of the lens.
An easy way to tell if your polarized lenses are the best quality is to tilt them 90 degrees (or tilt your head close to 90 degrees while wearing them).
You should see an even change in the light, as the lenses now block the vertical light waves.
Poorly made polarized sunglasses will not transition evenly and you will notice darker patches on the lens when rotated 90 degrees.
