What do polarized lenses do and how do they differ from plain ones?

Light reflected off horizontal surfaces (water, asphalt, bonnet, snow) is horizontally polarized. A polarized lens has a vertical filter that cuts it, so the glare and eye strain disappear — you see into the water and the road clearly. A plain dark lens simply reduces light, it doesn't cut reflection. UV protection is the same (UV400) on both.

Poorly made polarized sunglasses will not transition evenly and you will notice darker patches on the lens when rotated 90 degrees.
