Progressive lenses carry the power you need for distance at the top through to the middle. A little lower, the power changes continuously as you look down the lens, reaching the near power at the bottom of the frame. In between, the power varies to match the intermediate distances. So with a single pair you can see at every distance, from far to near — especially useful if you would otherwise switch between distance glasses (for myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism) and reading glasses.
