Sunglasses

Wearing sunglasses every day can prevent the damage the sun causes to your eyes. Sunglasses improve your vision and are the perfect fashion accessory.

If the sun does not bother my eyes, do I still need sunglasses?

Yes. The sun emits harmful UV rays that can cause photokeratitis, pterygium and permanent retinal damage.

What exactly are UV rays?

Ultraviolet (UV) rays lie just before violet, in the visible light spectrum. Their main source is sunlight. The ultraviolet light is divided into three different types: UVA, UVB and UVC. UVA has longer wavelengths and passes through glass easily. UVB rays are the most dangerous, making sunglasses and sunscreen essential. UVC rays do not reach the Earth, because the ozone in the atmosphere blocks them.

What are the different types of sunglass lenses?

Different sunglass lens tints can help you see better in different conditions.

  • Blue-blocker lenses block blue light and usually have an amber-brown color. Studies show blue light is harmful and could increase the risk of eye damage from diseases such as macular degeneration. These lenses are popular among skiers, hunters, boaters and pilots, who use them to increase contrast.
  • Both polarized sunglass lenses (polarized) and lenses with an anti-reflective coating help eliminate annoying reflections and glare. Polarized lenses in particular are used a lot by those involved with the sea and snow, but also by cyclists and drivers.
  • Lenses with anti-reflective coatings reduce the glare caused by light reflected off the back surface of your sunglass lenses.
  • Mirrored sunglass lenses: they limit the amount of light entering your eyes, so you feel more comfortable.
  • Sunglass lenses with mirror coatings (also called flash mirrors) are a highly reflective coating applied to the front surface of the sunglass lenses to reduce the amount of light entering the eye. This makes them especially useful for activities in very bright sun, such as skiing on snow on a sunny day.
Technology has advanced, so today's choice of mirror coatings includes all the colors of the rainbow, as well as silver, gold and metallic copper. Warm pink, blue - almost any color is available.
  • The choice of color of a mirrored sunglass lens is a purely aesthetic decision. The color of the mirror coating you choose does not affect color perception. What determines the darkness of the lenses and the vision is the color of the lens beneath the mirror coating.

How to choose: which sunglasses suit your face shape

The rule we apply in the store is contrast: the frame should balance the lines of the face, not repeat them.

    • Round face: angular shapes, square or rectangular (Wayfarer, Oakley Holbrook, rectangular Prada) that give the face definition.
    • Square face: round, oval or aviator frames that soften the jawline (Ray-Ban Round, Persol, curved oversized Gucci).
    • Oval face: almost every shape works; just watch the size so the frame does not exceed the width of the face.
    • Heart-shaped face: cat-eye and aviator with a thin frame, balancing the wide forehead with the narrow chin.

Detailed examples per shape are in our guide which sunglasses suit my face shape, separately for men and women. For the frame size (e.g. 52-18-140) see the glasses size guide.

UV400 protection, CE marking & authenticity

Every pair of sunglasses at Eye-Shop comes from the official distributors of the brands, carries the CE mark and has UV400 lenses, i.e. 100% protection from UVA and UVB radiation. A darker lens does not mean better protection: UV protection is a property of the lens material, not of its tint.

Read what UV400 means on sunglasses, how to tell authentic from fake sunglasses and which lens suits you: polarized, photochromic or mirror.
